ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF COAL COOKING PROCESS
To assess the environmental impact of cooking process via ambient monitoring of cokeoven areas. Air sampling on 5 critical locations in the cokeoven area (Bakar, Bakarac, Krasnica, Škrljevo and Kostrena). Air sample analysis was targeted at estimating air concentrations of major air pollutants such as smole, ammonia, phenol and polyciclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Analysis was performed using standard laboratory methods. The results were interpreted in accordance to the referent Croatian regulations. Air sample analysis revealed the average air concentration of SO2 to be considerably higher than the maximal permissible level. Average air concentrations of smoke, ammonia and phenol were bellow maximal permissible. However, the most striking results were obtained via measuring PAH air concentrations. Actual average air concentrations extremelly (up to 121.fold) surpassed maximal permissible level. On the grounds of such striking ambient monitoring results it was assessed that no assanation and safety at work would serve the purpose. Therefore, the plant was shut down.
