Excessive Drinking of Liquor, Wine or Beer and High Arterial Blood Pressure Prevalence : Cross Sectional Study on Croatian Work Active Population

To investigate differences in high arterial blood pressure prevalence between groups of liquor, wine or beer heavy drinkers and alcohol abstainers in Croatian work active population. Data used in this research were taken from Croatian Adult Health Survey (2003 CAHS) and referred to the age range between 18 and 65 years. Heavy drinking was defined as daily consummation greater or equal 3 standard drinks continuously in at least one year period of time. Among heavy drinkers, 60 subjects (10.5%) were exclusively drinking liquor, 186 (32.6%) only wine and 326 (56.9%) were drinking only beer. Alcohol abstainers were used as control group (2018 subjects). Men were predominant among heavy drinkers, 507 (88.7%). Median (inter quartile range) of drunken standard measures per day was 7 (6-10) for liquor, 7 (5-12) for wine and 7 (6-14) for beer. Logistic regression showed that only wine drinkers have more chance to have high blood pressure (odds ratio [OR]:1.49 ; 95% CI:1.05-2.12). Compared to alcohol abstainers, prevalence of high blood pressure was significantly higher among liquor drinkers (51.6%) and wine drinkers (50.5%). High arterial blood pressure prevalence among beer drinkers (31.9%) was not significantly different from hypertension prevalence of control group. Results have shown that excessive consummation of specific alcohol beverage, i.e liquor, wine or beer have different impact on high arterial blood pressure prevalence.
