FTNMR and FTMS: complementary spectroscopies in magnetic fields

Although the basic equations for both spectroscopies have been known much earlier ( = qB m– 1, Lawrence and Livingstone, 1932 for FTMS ;  =  B(1- ), Bloch and Purcell, 1946 for FTNMR) it took 42 years (Commisarow and Marshal, 1974) and 20 years (Ernst and Andersen, 1966), respectively, to bring them to life. The reasons (magnetic field, computer and vacuum system development) are discussed. Recent results on gas phase ligation of metal monocations by PAHs and their heteroanalogs in FTICR MS are presented.
