DIFFERENT CENTRAL ACTION OF STREPTOZOTOCIN AND ALLOXAN ON COGNITION

Streptozotocin and alloxan are selectively toxic for insulin producing/secreting cells, producin diabetes diabetes after peripheral but not central administration. Recently cognitive deficits in streptozotocin - intracerebroventriculary treated rats, while cognition in alloxan - icv treated rats has not been investigated. By means of Morris Water Maze Swimming Test, we have compared memory and learning function in STZ - and alloxan- icv treated rats, 3 months after icv drug treatment.Contrary to statistically significan decreament of of these function in STZ -icv rats, and some similar central neurochemical effects, ATZ - and alloxan- icv treatment demonstrate different influence on cognition, the later being deprived of any effect.
