Biodegradation of olive oil wastewater by means of selected strain of yeasts
Two-step biodegradation of olive-mill wastewater by means of Trichosporon cutaneum (first step of biodegradation) and Geotrichum candidum (second step of biodegradation) was investigated. Experiments were carried out at defined parameters: dissolved oxygen concentration 2.5-3.5 mg/L, pH-value 6.0-6.5 and temperature 20-22 oC for first step of biodegradation and dissolved oxygen concentration 0.2-0.4 mg/L and temperature 20-22 oC for second step of biodegradation. During the first step of biodegradation by means of Trichosporon cutaneum was achieved 84% COD and 95% phenolic compounds removal, while the second step of biodegradation by means of Geotrichum candidum were removed remained phenolic compound and reduced wastewater color. As well the use yeasts biomass has shown good settling quality and therefore good separation from biodegraded wastewater.
