Granulated biomass of the mixed microbial cultures in simultaneous process of biodegradation with denitrification and nitrification of xenobiotics in pharmaceutical wastewater
New European legislation on the quality of water released into environment requires low levels of nitrogen – and phosphorus – containing substances. Compared to chemical quality of municipal wastewater, process wastewater, especially that from pharmaceutical industry, contains high levels of nitrogenated substances. In addition to them, wastewater contains very complex chemically structured ingredients-xenobiotics-frequently occurring as nitrification inhibitors. Their structure often contains nitrogen, to which nitrification inefficiency of wastewater from pharmaceutical industry is attributed. With granulated biomass of the mixed microbial culture comprising nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas europaea, Nitrosococcus mobilis and Nitrosolobus multiformis as well as denitrifying bacteria Pseudomonas sp. and Xanthomonas sp. in a two-step process (aerobic-anoxic) under defined parameters of biodegradation with denitrification and nitrification a high removal level of nitrogen-containing substances has been achieved from wastewater generated by the pharmaceutical industry that applied microbiological and chemical drugs manufacture. Degradation of the ingredients from xenobiotics has been achieved too and entire removal of ammonium. Nitrate reduction level depended on the available carbon sources. The accomplished quality of treated wastewater with respect to carbon containing substances (COD and BOD5 levels) and the ingredients with nitrogen, comprise with the effective European laws.
