Growth dynamics of white muscle fibers in relation to somatic growth of larvae of european sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.)

The body length and muscle fibers diameter from the right hypoxial tail myomeres of 100 sea bass larvae (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) 40-90 days old, cultivated at the fish farm &#171; CENMAR&#187; NIN, Croatia, were mesured. The larvae were kept at the temperature from 19-200 and fed with the standard food for respective age. The body lenght in 40-90 days old larvae varied from 8 mm to 42 mm with significant increase within 10 days intervals (P<0.05) except between days 50 and 60 when there was no increase in the body length. The measured muscle fibers diameters ranged from 10 to 80 &#181; m with the increasing mean value except in the period from days 50 to 60. The fibres measuring 10-40 &#181; m of diameter occurred in the larvae aged up to 60 days, the fibers measuring 60-80 &#181; m occurred only from day 70. In larve 90 days old there were no fibres of 10-20 &#181; m in diameter, while the occurrence of fibres of 70-80 &#181; m diameter increased. From days 70 to 90 the body lenth of the larvae and the fibers diameter shawed statistically significant concordance. The temporary cessation of larval body lenth growing and of the muscle fibers hypertrophy in larvae 50 to 60 days old was associated, probably, within the transition from live food to a dried diet on day 45. The growing of the body lenght and the muscle fibers hypertrophy proceeded after addition of the minced dried fish to the food on the day 59.
