Breeding and genetic work at creation of sorts of winter wheat at the Bc Institute for the breeding and production of plants in Zagreb is a constituent part of the programme for the improvements in the wheat production in Croatia. A very successful activity has been formed by the Bc Institute at the area of breeding winter wheat.The results of that work are well known to the agricultural practice both in Croatia and abroad. Namely, wheat breeders of the Bc Institute.Zagreb have since 1964, when the first sort Vuka was acknowledged, unitl now, created 81 different sorts of winter wheat. By its genetic potential the fruitfulness of this sort presents top achievements in the selection. Out of 31 sorts acknowledged abroad, some were strong standards (Baranjka and Korona in Hungary), and Marija sort that was acknowledged in 1988 is still a strong standard in the Republic of Croatia. In the Croatian Committee we have also had strong standards (Zlatna Dolina and Super Zlatna), and among them there is a still highly fruitful and stable sort Sana, acknowledged back in 1983. Over 1500 wheat sources of resistance were tested under conditions of artifical infection and chosen 7 genotypes were mutually crossed by using the scheme of partial diallel. Sources of resistance markedly differed in level of resistance, which ranged from 0, 65 to 3, 89 (rating scale 0-5). Improving the level of resistance was obtained in F1 generation, as well as in F1 x F1 crosses in the several combinations in comparison with their components. Additive gene effect (i.e. minor gene effects) and dominance were noticed. The highest level of resistance was found in F1 generation and in F1 x F1 crosses of combinations involving soruces of resistance Bizel and Poncheau. Bc winter wheat varieties Zdenka, Mihelca and Aura were analyzed for rheological properties in large-scale trials at locations Vinkovci, Belje and Kutjevo during three years (2001/2002, 2002/2003, and 2003/2004). Laboratory testings conducted at respective locations included the following quality properties: the wet gluten quantity, farinographne and entensographye measurements. The obtained values of rheological properties of Zdenka, Mihelca and Aura prove that they have accumulated high genetic potential for stabile technological quality of kernels and flour. Using flour of the above varieties contributes to higher nutritive value of the baking products. Bc winter wheat varieties were tested in large-scale trials in Croatia also in the past season (2004-2005). The trials included both the varieties developed by domestic breeding companies and the introduced ones, i.e. the majority of winter wheat varieties grown in the country. The aim of this paper is to give a survey of performance data of Bc winter wheat varieties from large scale-trials (Belje, Vinkovci and Kutjevo) in 2005. Bc winter wheaat vaarieties were tested on each of the above three locations depending on the possibilities. Performance data of the Bc winter wheat varieties obtained from large-scale trials in 2005 proved once again that Bc wheat varieties possess genetic potential for high grain yield. The results clearly indicate that Bc Institute with its wheat assortment can assure high and stable yields for wheat producers.
