Population regresion of the island of Vis in 20th century
During the 20th century, population development in this area is caracterized by general ragression (from 9914 inhabitants in 1900 to 3576 inhabitants in 2001). In other words, in period of the end of 20th century in this area lived one-third of population in comparison to the period of the began of same century. These changes are initiated by strong emigration and continued by negative natural increase of population. These circumstances caused extremely ageing of island population, as well as degradation of demographic (particularly biological) structure. The main consequence of these regressive processes is distability for demographic self-revival and need for immigration revival in this island area.
