IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING THE SHIP MANOUVERING CHARACHTERISTICS IN SIMULATOR TRAINING
The knowledge of ship maneuvering characteristics is based upon the relevant theoretical knowledge and is a prerequisite for safe ship handling. Poor or insufficient theoretical knowledge, however, may result in a low or bad performance of a particular ship handling operation by the navigating officer. This can cause damage to own ship and other nearby ships, to cargo and can, likewise, imperil life at sea. In the extreme cases, it may also give rise to the loss of ships or cargo and to fatal losses to the ship's crew. Specialized simulators are a very useful aid in the training of ship handling. Using these simulators much can be done on the level of education of shipmasters, deck officers and pilots. During the education of students and experienced nautical personnel some problems arise which require special analysis. The most important teaching task is creating as real a navigational situation as possible.
