ECG Recording with Selective Transesophageal Pacing Leads
The new type of esophageal multipolar pacing lead the selective esophageal pacing lead, produces an electric field that can be directed towards the target myocardial tissue. This lead is suitable for recording of esophageal ECG and pacing of either cardiac chambers. The selectivity is obtained through the leads mechanical construction, i.e. through increased number of angular electrodes. Angular electrodes are the conductive part of a cylindrical shell with a defined central angle, placed at different interelectrode distances on the lead. Angular electrodes with three different central angles were under test. The more complicated mechanical construction of the lead demands a complex switching system and improved signal processing in the pacemaker. The aim of this study was to measure and analyse the electric field of selective leads and to establish the criteria for construction of clinically usable leads. Two electrical parameters of the selective lead are used for comparing of leads with different angular electrodes: the directivity angle pD and the field rejection ratio FR.
