Design and construction of the furniture to lie on suited to individual needs
Artificial environment and the imposed hectic lifestyle distract and alienate people from their origins, thus widening the gap between them and the natural, biologically healthy living. The outcome is the increasing incidence of psychophysical disorders and neuroses. Current status of ecological awareness along with a desire to preserve the environment and health, encourage the man to adopt some of the natural elements imminent to him and which provide relaxation, rest and recovery. Living and working areas and furniture designed are structurally shaped and composed of the elements taken from natural environment which are relaxing to human body. A bed is a piece of furniture which we use throughout our whole lifetime. This is so because they are used to give birth on, die, make love, rest, recover and spend a part of idle time. To be suited and proper, a bed must provide at all times the comfort in all positions which are part of sleeping habits, a uniform pressure interaction between the body and mattress, rest, healthy and restoring sleep which keeps us healthy, and hygienic and ecological aptness. This explains why big furniture manufacturers develop bed systems made of special materials and according to special technologies. This has lead to development of modern bed constructions, such as waterbeds featuring wave motion reduction system, heating, etc., of air beds, applied vibroacoustics in the construction of the furniture to lie on and of elastic constructions made of various materials. Present work gives a review of modern bed constructions and bed systems, technical characteristics and properties of the air-, water- and spring mattresses, application of vibroacoustics in the furniture to lie on and some modern and new trends in the design and engineering of this furniture. Familiarity with contemporary materials used for the manufacture of the furniture to lie and rest on is indispensable in design and construction of the bed mattresses, foundations and other functional systems characterized by functionality suited to their individual users.
