Importance of Croatian ethnic parishes in Canada in preserving cultural identity of Croats
By indicating to some basic facts pertaining to the historic circumstances of migration of Croats in Canada the author gives an insight into the socio-cultural and economic background underlying the foundation of Croatian catholic parishes in the country. Thus, an expansion of Croatian parishes across Canada happens only in the post-war decades as a result of the increased population of Croats, availability of Croatian priests but also in a more positive stand of the Canadian Catholic church towards ethnic parishes in general. Yet, the maintenance of a uniquely Croatian Catholic culture has had problems: regional differences and socio-economic divisions within the three generations of Croatian immigrants, geographic separation, the lack of clerical press, to name the main ones. The second part of the exposition pertains to the field of education as one of the most significant activities in Croatian parishes in preserving cultural identity of Croats in Canada.
