Religion of youth in Croatia

It could be argued that, compared to adolescents in other European countries, Croatian adolescents are highly religious. More than 90% of surveyed Croatian adolescents state that they have been baptised in their childhood and more than 30% attend religious service regularly or at least once a week. Apart from great influence of their family, their religious socialisation is probably influenced also by religious education at school which is in elementary schools attended by majority of pupils. In that regard, it should be noted that, according to the survey, religious education at school is perceived among adolescents in Croatia as a classroom subject that educates for life in contemporary society rather than for the faith in the exclusive meaning of this word. On the other hand, young Croats, as all young Europeans, are open to different religious expressions and practices, religious pluralisation and post-modern search for the sacred also outside the framework of traditional religious institutions. When it comes to world view orientation, Croatian adolescents put pragmatism on the top of the scale. Many Croatian sociologists pointed out to this issue in their analyses of Croatian society. The concepts of humanism and pantheism are also ranked high on the scale, which indicates that the identity of young Croats is stratified and that it should be studied as such.
