Hyperbaric oxigenation as an adjunct in the treatment of mandibular osteomyelitis in a patient with osteopetrosis
An example is presented of persistent mandibular ostemyelitis in a 30-year old female patient with Albers Schonberg, s osteopetrosis. The disease developed as a complication after extraction of lower wisdom tooth and lasted for two years and three months until cure. All Surgical methods to remove the necrotic bone and primarily suture the wound ended in failure, regardless of antibiotic protetction. After each operation the wound increased in size and also the area of necrotic bone. During the last three months, with local operations for modelling the necrotic bone, alternating therapy with antibiotics of the groups of penicillin, amoxycillin, cephalosporin, application of metronidazole, and topical application of gentamycin and local application of Peruanic balsam as a stimulator of granulation tissue formation, the patient was treated on 60 occasions for periods of 6o minutes each in hyperbaric chamber at pressure of 2, 4 bars, with pauses of 5 minutes after 20 minutes of breathing oxigen, which resulted in considerable improvement in her condition
