Experimental investigation of the in-plane shear behavior of URM walls strengthed with GFRP straps and reinforced walls with steel and GFRP bars
Tests conducted at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb were performed on unreinforced, (URM) reinforced and strengthened unreinforced masonry walls. Walls were subjected to steady vertical compression stress and tested with variable horizontal shear load. Unreinforced masonry walls were strengthened with GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) straps. Reinforced masonry (RM) walls were reinforced with steel or GFRP bars in horizontal joints. The aim of these tests was to investigate efficiency of strengthened walls with GFRP straps and reinforced walls regarding enhancement of shear resistance when compared them to URM walls. The results have shown that URM walls strengthened with GFRP straps have increased their shear resistance, and what is even more important, that they change their behavior from non-ductile (shear) failure into ductile one caused by compression failure at bottom corner (toe) of the wall (due to bending).
