The effect of apical foramen and electrode diameter on the accuracy of electronic root canal measuring devices
The influence of root canal diameter and file thickness on the magnitude of electric impedance, used to determine the length of the root canal by electronic apex locators, was tested on a model. As found, the magnitude of impedance depends on the diameter of the apical foramen and not on file size. The phenomena has been explained theoretically. It has also been demonstrated that the measurement actually involves the resistance of the electrolyte, which depends on the diameter of the apical foramen, because current density is the highest at that point. This also explains the different resistance change (sensitivity) for different file thickness and apical foramen diameters if the file tip is outside or inside the root canal.
