Enhancement of infrared biotelemetry for monitoring ambulatory patients over wide areas
A limitation of infrared (IR) telemetry is its confined range to a small room. Shadows and non-reflecting surfaces in large rooms make it necessary to use multiple receivers for reliable operation. The goal of this work was to optimize infrared diffuse reflection telemetry by determining the most efficient pulse transmission, and most sensitive photo-receivers including how many photodiodes to use and optimizing their connection to the preamplifier to extend user s free mobility. For this task a summing circuit was developed which sums the signals from photo-receivers located at different places in the room or in several rooms, halls and staircases. A design feature is that each receiver which has lost the signal is switched off to avoid adding its noisy output to the remaining signals. This system has been applied in the rehabilitation of patients with lower extremity injury.
