Salona, the Urbs orientalis
The eastern part of Salona, Urbs orientalis, as it is known, is intersected by many channels of the deltaic mouth of the Jadro River. New aecheological investigations have determined the course of the eastern part of the main channel, which consituted the backbone for the city grid. It entered the city through the eastern ramparts and forked in the centre. Here there was the forum with a temple dedicated to Jupiter, parts of which are built into the embankments of the channel of the river in the form of spolia. It was in this temple that the imperial cult was practised, right up to the period of the tetrarchs, as new findings have confirmed.
