A "Netiquette" of Online Learning: Communication Problems in Discussion Boards
The purpose of the study is to determine a typology of problems that arise in communication in online environments, including legal issues, and to formulate a set of conventions based on “ Netiquette” but revised for the learning environment. A typology of problems was identified and classed according to level of recommendation: Some recommendations are made for all cases, while others are at the instructor’ s discretion. For example, “ flaming” or personal attacks should never be allowed in an academic environment, and should not be tolerated in personal email. On the other hand, length of posts should be at the instructor’ s discretion: in some disciplines and courses, lengthy posts are required, while in others, shorter posts are the norm. The Netiquette recommendations may be useful in avoiding some identified problems, particularly as the recommendations are written to fit various disciplines. The study also contributes to the literature of computer mediated communication, conversation analysis, and distance education.
