Correlation between the TCD and EEG

Introduction: TCD (Transcranial Doppler Sonography) is a non-invasive ultrasound diagnostic method, which indicates the status of cerebral hemodynamic, now in use for 23 years. EEG (Electroencephalography) is a method of registration of electric potentials of brain used for 72 years (since 1934). Aim: To establish correlation between the TCD and EEG as a consequence of VB insufficiency. Methodology: We analyzed 50 individuals (22 male et 28 female), with symptoms of VB insufficiency, aged 40 to 60 years. In the first day of treatment the history and the clinical examination were registered, laboratory tests and the TCD and EEG. The TCD finding was described as pathological in all cases with the reduced middle speed of blood flow in 2 or more arteries of the VB drainage. Results: TCD was pathological in 82% of individuals, and EEG in 30% of the examinees. The reduced values of middle speed blood flow were found in AVD in 30 examinees, AVL in 54%, in AB in 52% individuals, ACPR in 26% and in ACPL in 18%. 36% examinees had registered reduced, middle speed value of blood flow in 3 or more arteries of VB drainage. Out of total 30% of pathological EEG findings, the largest number was not specifically changed (in 28%). Conclusions: TCD and EEG show significant correlation in the clinical entity of VB insufficiency. In cases of the reduced values of blood flow in 2 or more arteries of VB drainage, the correlation is almost total. As the non-invasive diagnostic methods, the TCD and EEG are of great value for estimation of level of derangement and the related prognosis.
