Degradation of Atrazine using Fenton and Fenton "like" processes
In this study Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), Fenton and Fenton "like", using ferrous and ferric sulphate as well as iron powder have been applied for the oxidative degradation of pesticide, atrazine, in simulated wastewater. The degradation of atrazine was effectively achieved by hydroxyl radicals, which were generated in Fenton and Fenton "like" processes. Experiments have been performed as a function of reagent’ s concentrations and ratios in order to find optimal parameters of Fenton and Fenton "like" processes in a batch reactor. The efficiency of particular applied AOP has been estimated on the basis of total organic carbon (TOC) and HPLC analyses. The maximal extent of atrazine degradation, 38.2% has been achieved using molar ratio of ferrous ions and hydrogen peroxide 1 : 50 and 27.8 mg/L concentration of ferrous salt. A mathematical model describing kinetic of atrazine degradation was developed. Pseudo-first order rate constants for atrazine degradation and mineralization have been estimated.
