Control of EMG Clenching Level by Biofeedback Method
The influence of the clenching level on the EMG activity of the anterior temporal and masseter muscles was examined as they are principal jaw-closing muscles and are responsible for the path and strength of the mandibular closure. By biofeedback method a control of the clenching level from the right temporal muscle was obtained during the voluntary clenching of teeth in maximal intercuspal position. EMG activity was recorded on 8 young subjects with natural teeth by using the 8-channel PC based EMGA-1 system, specially designed for the purpose of the electro-kynesyological examinations of the stomatoghathic system. At three different levels, the examined EMG activities reveal the changes in the activity indexes. Higher values of asymmetry indices were found for the moderate and low clenching levels in comparison with maximal voluntary clenching level.
