Ionized surfactant-derived organic contaminants in Croatian municipal wastewaters determined by liquid chromatography/electrospray mass spectrometry

A comprehensive survey of different municipal Croatian wastewaters by full scan LC/ESI/MS in both positive and negative ionisation modes indicated significant presence of numerous ionised chemicals, most of the identified compounds belonging to detergent-derived contaminants. The most abundant detergent-derived groups included anionic surfactants such as linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) and alkyl ethoxy sulphates (AES), reaching mg/l levels in raw wastewaters. Biological processes during conventional sewage treatment plants are very efficient in removing both classes of these anionic surfactants. In secondary effluents, important contribution to ionised surfactant-derived species may derive from polar biotransformation products of nonionic surfactants. Ionisable transformation products of alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APnEO), including alkylphenols (APs) and alkylphenoxy carboxylates (APECs), are weakly estrogenic and represent a major environmental concern. Behaviour of these endocrine-disrupting compounds was studied in several mechanical-biological sewage treatment plants
