Modeling of Long Structures on Infinite Soil
Useful and interesting engineering task is analysis of long structures lying on supporting ground and subject to moving load. Usual engineering practice is to use Winkler model for the ground neglecting the fact that it does not allow propagation of transversal waves but through the structure. The shortcomings are evident even in the static analysis: the ground deforms only where the force is present. Quite often not only those structures are actually of infinite length but also they lay on supporting ground having infinite length itself. This paper describes model developed for dynamic analysis of long structures subject to moving load and having endless boundary conditions (no reflection of transversal waves). Also, ground has been modeled with a series of beams on elastic foundation that are connected with the structure on points of supports thus simulating elastic half-space and allowing propagation of transversal waves also through the ground. Numerical examples are providing comparison between the methods and presenting more realistic results of the proposed approach.
