One day surgery : a new approach to ophthalmology

Twenty years ago medicine practice was based on large number of medical doctors and distinguished doctors with high academic achievements (The number of such academic titles was supposed to act as an assurance for successful treatment). Also the big and famous clinics were furthermore characterized by large number of beds and huge amounts of space for various medical facilities. In such hospitals patients had spent days and days doing laboratory tests and waiting for an operation. Contrary to this, modern medicine and today’ s approach to treatment varies tremendously. While old hospitals tried to impress with their mastodon tic looks and huge number of medical personnel, modern facilities give more attention to good organization and medical personnel training. Patients are not being admitted to hospitals in order to do the tests, to wait for the operation but rather the whole preparations should be done prior to admittance to hospital. So a patient fully prepared comes to a hospital only to undergo a procedure. Main principles of such a modern medicine and one day surgery are: fewer number of doctors and fewer number of patients' beds. Those combined with optimal working area result in high efficacy. It could be postulated that efficacy of a modern facility is defined by a number of procedures performed and a number of doctors involved in it. As an important factor in this equation we have to consider also a number of employees, number of patients' beds and general expenses. When increased, these factors diminish the total efficacy of the facility and vice versa. Modern medicine in a form of one day surgery is capable of giving a high quality service. This high quality is achieved by excellent treatment results and very low complication rate. This creates good conditions for fast rehabilitation as patients go home after short stay in a hospital. Modern medical approach involves large number of medical procedures performed, based on modern technology. No patient admittance to hospital is necessary- after procedure is done patients go home without waiting and spending unnecessary time in hospital department. Medical treatment does not equal to admittance to hospital. It rather comprises of a minimally invasive procedure performed followed by patients’ home recovery. The state of the art surgery and anesthesia includes minimally invasive procedure, short postoperative monitoring and speedy recovery. One day surgery was instituted for the first time in the USA, in the early 60's. Nowadays it is performed in most of the European countries, involving more than 50% of medical procedures One day surgery offers more comfort to patients, makes hospital stay shorter, and this all yields lesser financial costs, so it is medically, socially and economically beneficial
