Solidification and stabilization of waste zeolite in cement matrix
The study has examined the possibility of successful solidification and stabilization of waste zeolite saturated by heavy metal ions in Portland cement composites. Natural zeolite used in removal of heavy metal ions from wastewaters in zinc-coating industry has to be taken care of permanently and in a way that will not be harmful for the environment. Microcalorimetrical measurements were performed to determine the effect of waste zeolite content of 0 - 50 mass % on hydration processes in CEM I type Portland cement. The success of solidification and stabilization was tested by a standard leaching test, USEPA TCLP. Bending and compressive strength of cement composites prepared with different contents of waste zeolites were determined to establish possible application of such materials in construction industry. The examinations have confirmed that zeolite actively participates in hydration processes, and that the cement composite obtained successfully stabilizes substances harmful for the environment. Strength developed after 28 days of hydration is satisfactory for samples containing up to 30% of waste zeolite, which guarantees good quality construction material.
