English and Croatian phraseological false pairs
This paper deals with the question of phraseological false pairs in English and Croatian. We shall attempt to prove that the functionalist categorization of false pairs at word level can be applied to false pairs above word level, more specifically to English and Croatian idioms which consist of similar components, but have totally or partially different meanings. Such reanalysis implies taking into consideration the specificities of idioms as opposed to single lexical items. We claim that there are two important factors to consider: the conceptual motivation of idioms and the importance of general world knowledge of non-native users when faced with an unfamiliar idiom in a foreign language which resembles a similar counterpart in their own language.
