Small angle scattering of synchrotron light on nanophase TiO_2 measured at ELETTRA
Dye- sensitized cells differ from the conventional semiconductor devices in that they separate the function of light absorption from charge carrier transport. The device is based on a 10 microns thick, optically transparent film of titanium dioxide particles a few nanometers in size, coated with a monolayre of charge-transfer dye to sesitize film for light harvesting. In our previous studies some properties of nanophase TiO_2 obtained by sol-gel method have been measured by Raman spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, high resolution electron microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Grain sizes and distributions obtained by all four methods agree and vary between 5 and 12 nm. In order to determine the void volume and pores distribution in our TiO_2 samples, prepared by four different methods: spay, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), sol-gel and from commercial P25, we have performed SAXS measurements using synchrotron radiation at ELETTRA, Trieste, which has 1000 times higher intensity than X-ray tube of our set-up in Zagreb. The first results of these measurements are presented in this work.
