Chemical Interactions Between High Polluted Slag and Sediments From the River Deule Canal (Northern France)
Metallurgical industries in northern France produce yearly thousands of tons of metals and, consequently, large amounts of potentially dangerous wastes (slag). Leaching of toxic metals from slag particles in contact with water and sediments was studied in this work, particularly the situations when sediment is disturbed and brought from anoxic to oxic conditions. The change in physico-chemical conditions also changes the behavior of metals. Since the role of sediment in retaining adsorbed materials is very important, these investigations are aimed to give an insight in the ability of sediments to adsorb and retain heavy metals released from the slag under controlled conditions.
