Extreme bura wind on the Adriatic
The bora wind as a cold, strong and turbulent wind is a main characteristic of the coastal region climate in Croatia. Its maximum gusts could reach more that 200 km/h. Examples of measured wind data analysis shows that bora wind is meteorological phenomenon that varies considerably with time and space. The bora wind speed could increase for 50 km/h and more in two consecutive seconds. Therefore, safety and functionality of roads depend on good knowledge of wind characteristics based on long-term wind data measured on large number of locations and good weather forecast. So, the proper climatological analysis of extreme bora events and the possibility of the operational ALADIN numerical weather prediction mesoscale high-resolution model to forecast the strength and onset time of bora wind has great importance for maintaining road traffic safety in regions with severe bora wind.
