The Effects of Air Pollution in the City of Rijeka, Croatia, 1980-2000
During the late sixties and seventies the city of Rijeka underwent rapid industrialization. High emission levels resulted in elevated ambient air pollution so that the city was one of the most polluted in Croatia during the mid-eighties. Thus, the annual means of sulphur dioxide exceeded 100 μ g/m3 at some urban sites. Air pollution levels and the harmful effects on materials (paintings), plants (lichens) and humans (human reproduction) within the city area during the last two decades of the XX century are presented in this work.
