Corrosion characteristics of aluminium alloy in the H_3PO_4-CO_2 mixture

The corrosion resistance of aluminiuma in a given environment depends on the choice of alloy and the effects of alloy constituents interacting in it. Specific ions present in the environment also have an influence on the corrosion resistance of the alloy used. The alloy Al 6063 examined in this work contains silicon and magnesium able to form Mg_2Si and iron which can form an intermetalic second phase (FeAl_3). Alloys with balanced proportions of magnesium and silicon are subjected to less pitting and less intergranular corrosion, while the FeAl_3 particles present on the surface weaken the oxide film around them. In order to investigate the influence of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of the Al 6063 alloy in the mixture H_3PO_4-CO_2 the folloving electrochemical methods were applied: determination of dependence of E_OCP on time, recording of anodic and cahodic polarization curves, and cyclic voltammetry. It hasd been observed thad corrosion parameters obtained are strongly temperature depent. Because the solubility product and the adhesive properties of corrosion products depend on temperature, the results obtained are directly related to alloy constituents and corrosion products formed. The decrease in the alloy resistivity to corrosion at higher temperatures could be attributed to the above mentioned factors.
