Leptin levels in hypertensive patients with myocardial hypertrophy
Obesity is strongly related to hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. One of the main consequences of hypertension is myocardial hypertrophy. Leptin, the product of an adipocyte, is related to energy expenditure and weight regulation. Recent reports showed presence of leptin in the skeletal muscles, heart, vessels and brain. Leptin has various effects on cardiovascular system, such as neointima formation as well as cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Our study included 40 hypertensive patients with myocardial hypertrophy, of different ages, both men and women, with BMI between 25 and 30 kg/m2. Myocardial hypertrophy and left ventricular ejection fraction were measured by ultrasound. Leptin level in blood was measured between 7 and 7:30 a.m. using radioimmunoassay with polyclonal antibodies. Results showed different values of blood leptin levels in men and women with myocardial hypertrophy. In addition, study gave better insight into adipocyte metabolism and its relation to arterial hypertension and consequential myocardial hypertrophy.
