Comparison of maize resistance to ear rot under artificial infection with Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium moniliforme
The most important lines and commercial maize hybrids were tested for resistance in two-year trials under artificial infection with Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium moniliforme. The applied methods of artificial ear infection and 1-9 rating scale proved successful, because significant differences among the tested genotypes were obtained. In artificial ear infection with F. graminearum the range from 2.5 to 7.8 was obtained for lines, while for the hybrids the range was from 1.7 to 4.7. In artificial ear infection with F. moniliforme the range for lines was from 1.8 to 8.2, and for the hybrids from 2.1 to 5.1. Comparing the resistance of 74 lines and 25 maize hybrids under artificial ear infection with F. graminearum and F. moniliforme the correlation coefficients obtained were r = 0.01 and r = - 0.11 for lines and hybrids respectively. Therefore, it is important to apply maize breeding for resistance to both ear rot pathogens.
