Childcare in Croatia-Perspectives from a Longitudinal Study
The Poster will present 5 year research project which provided empirical support to the social welfare reform of childcare. The participant in study were 954 children and their caretakers in medium sized residential care, foster families and small group-homes. Main findings: children are removed from their biological families rather late ; professionals prefer residential over foster care due to the more treatment possibilities ; children placed in residential care are at higher developmental risks ; the most vulnerable are girls, children changing placements, children without social support and those who experience everyday life as more stressful. Findings were used as sources of evidence based practice in social work: development of alternative communitybased solutions, appropriate early intervention, comprehensive family assessment and decision making, improvements in out-of-home care as well as widening family support possibilities in order to preserve family together.
