'By Word of Mouse': Metonymy and Conceptual Integration in Idiom Modifications

In this paper we will address the issue of the role of metonymy in conceptual integration networks. We will adduce some examples to demonstrate that metonymy may play a crucial role in conceptual integration processes although other cognitive mechanisms like metaphor, or some possible pragmatic effects, like e.g. irony may claim all the attention at first sight. Using the examples of modified phraseological units we will try to show that, alhough each such modification may exploit different types and numbers of metonymic links, the general principle holds, namely, that metonymy is often concomittant to and perhaps even most basic of all other cognitive mechanisms lying behind these linguistic expressions.
