Cinderella in Sprint Shoes
This research was carried out on the sample of 189 female pupils, aged 11 to 13, (divided into two subsamples) in the fifth and sixth form of the Zagreb primary schools. The purpose was to determine whether it was possible to distinguish between the talented and less talented female pupils in the 60m run on the basis of the modified model of social stratification and the success achievements in school (final grades in all subjects at the end of the schoolyear). The results of the multivariate F-test showed that 17 indicators of the social status did not significantly differentiate the talented female pupils from the less talented ones. From the series of univariate F-tests it became obvious that there was statistically significant difference between the talented pupils and the less talented ones at the .01 level of significance only in the variable the school success (marks). The results of the same tests at the .05 level significance showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the variables a weekend house possession, a PC possession and number of children in a family. The assumption that the differences would be larger if we were to compare the sample of examinees from various urban areas or from various towns offers the possibility for further researches in this field.
social stratification; success in school (marks); athletics; canonical discriminative analysis
