Mediterranean Croatia - current whitefly observations

Although the whitefly Aleurolobus olivinus (Silvestri, 1911) was recorded as an olive tree pest in Split and the surrounding Croatian coastal areas in 1937, it has been found only on Phillyrea angustipholia and Phillyrea latipholia species in the last decade. Because of the very low population density this whitefly is now rarely seen in the region today. According to the observations from 2005-2006 this pest species is more abundant in the southern part of the coast at the peninsula Prevlaka. It colonises on Phillyrea plants where nymphal density ranges from 1 to 5 individuals per leaf. The life cycle has not yet been investigated. However the whitefly Siphoninus phillyreae (Haliday, 1835) - poses a more serious problem to pear and olive crops along the coastal regions of Croatia. Often refered to locally as the "Ash" whitefly, it was observed last spring for the very first time on pear from the Split region. It occured together with the pear psylla and caused significant damages. It has been recorded only from Punica granatum and Phillyrea plant species in coastal gardens and forests, where previously enormous population densities were found. This whitefly has also caused significant damage on olive tree seedlings in greenhouses for the last three years where treatments with mineral oil have been applied to control it.
