Measurement of vibrational forces and brace attachment stiffnesses of ship's engine top braces
Vibrational forces in engine top braces(lateral support rods), and brace point of attachment (POA) vibrational accelerations were measured during the sea trial of 40000 tons bulk carrier wessel. On the two previously built sister ships, engine braces had cracked on several occasions. Uneven distribution of vibrational forces as the result of unequal POA stiffnesses was considered as one of the factors contributing to the failure. Results of analysis of previously measured and calculated data in time and frequency domain showed H vibrations unevenly distributed on 4 motor braces. Only slight force differencies were observed on previous ships, but shipyard decided to make stiffness of the structure behind brace POAs more uniform. These new measurements were expected to confirm the desired results and optionally, to point out any problem that was overlooked in previous measurements.
