Association Lathyro-Quercetum petraeae I. Horvat (1938) 1958 in the Požega hill area and its comparison with other distribution areas in Croatia
The association Lathyro-Quercetum petraeae was recorded and described in the area of the Požega hills only several years ago. In order to make its final definition and systematization, the association was analyzed in detail and compared with the stands from the rest of Pannonian Croatia. The result was an all-inclusive phytocoenological representation of this particularly valuable community. Ten localities in the Požega hills were phytocoenologically processed and the resulting releves were compared with 30 phytocoenological releves from other parts of Pannonian Croatia. Forest vegetation was investigated according to the principles of the Zurich-Montpellier School. All phytocoenological releves were entered in Turboveg database. Numerical analysis was made with SYN-TAX 2000 software. Synecological-vegetational research confirmed the presence of the associations Lathyro-Quercetum petraeae in the study area. They occupy the warmest, southern, eastern and western positions in the upper parts of the slopes and ridges. Although they do not cover large areas, they are important from a variety of aspects. A total of 80 species have been registered, of which thermophilic species of the order Quercetalia pubescentis dominate. Two groups of releves were clearly identified with synthetic processing and multivariate statistical analysis. The first group consists of releves from the Požega hills, Moslavačko Gorje and Kalnik - the subassociation festucetosum drymeiae, while the second is made up of releves from the northwest of Croatia - the subassociation typicum. The association has a distinctly independent, southern European and partially sub-Mediterranean character, as well as a transitional character from thermophilic towards acidophilic sessile oak stands. It has a protective role and enables forest sustainability in difficult ecological conditions. Its greatest value is reflected in biological diversity.
