Fishery and Fish Trade on the Dalmatian Coast at the End of the Middle Ages
The purpose of the paper is to cover five main aspects of the fishing in Venetian Dalmatia: the fishing areas, the fishing techniques, the mode and organisation of fish productions, the rules regulating local markets, and the export trade. During the discussion a variety of sources and research techniques will be used, including original late medieval and early modern documents (such as taking of portions of the aquatorium in lease or creating temporary corporations – societates) and literature (both artistic works and manuals), communal statutes regulating rules and conditions of fishing in Dalmatian cities and the sixteenth-century export licences (contraliterrae), but also results of modern historians’ research and the comparison with the state-of-art of contemporary productive zones. Among these sources particularly interesting are the contraliterae, which unfortunately do not cover the all areas of Dalmatia, but their use may give us a good idea of the different species of fishes exported and the destination of this trade.
