Living in the green belt: Suburbanization and nature protected area in Zagreb urban region – case of Bistra municipality

Bistra is a suburban municipality in the north-western section of the Zagreb urban region, a little bit over 20 kilometers from the city centre. Zagreb urban region has experienced dynamic growth in the last census period (1991-2001). In fact, for the first time in its history the city of Zagreb is loosing population while suburban belt is still growing. Bistra municipality has experienced substantial population growth in the last census period. Its central settlement, Donja Bistra, is one with the highest population growth in the western and north-western parts of Zagreb urban region. Prior research has shown that primary reason for demographic increase is residential suburbanization. At the same time, Bistra municipality, as well as parts of northern and north-western sections of the suburban belt, are located close or within boundaries of the Medvednica Nature Park. The relatively rapid growth of the population intensified pressure on limited spatial resources and could lead to degradation of environment in protected area. On the other hand, limitations posed by nature park legislations could also influence further economic development. This paper, based on the questionnaire survey, researches experiences of local population living on the border of nature protected area.
