Frequency and types of tumours in horses detected during a 62-year period (1929-1990
During the investigated period 6511 horses were necropsied. The tumours were found in 63 animals or 0.96%. The average age of affected horses was five and half years and sexual distribution Was as follows: castrated males 37, stallions 3, mares22, and one foal. The tumours were divided according to the affected organic system and type of tumour. Thus, the alimentary system was affected in 6 (9, 52%), urogenital 11 (17, 46%), respiratory 5 (7, 94%), skeletal 3 (4, 76%), skin 4 (6, 35%), endocrine glands 1 (1, 59%), vascular 3 (4, 76%) and lymphopoietic 23 (35, 5%)animals, while melanosarcomas were found in 7 animals or 11, 11%. Intriguing findings were differences in the frequency lymphosarcomas, equine sarcoids, and granulosa-cell tumours of the ovary. The latter two tumours were not found in the Zagreb area , but the former one was much more frequentthen observed in the literatury data.
