Renewable Energy Policy in Croatia: Current Status and Future Activities
Renewable energy sources have already significant share in both primary energy and electricity production in Croatia. This is mostly due to the fact that 51% of available electricity generating capacities is in hydro power plants. However, besides hydro power plants, there is no larger share of renewable energy sources in electricity production, although significant potentials exist. Utilisation of these potentials is one of the most important goals defined within Croatian energy sector development strategy. Increased use of renewables will lead to improved security of energy supply and reduced negative environmental impacts coming from energy sector. In order to trigger and support renewable energy sources penetration into the power system, favourable legislative and financial framework, which will be in congruence with open market philosophy, must be adopted. Important steps have already been undertaken. In this paper, an overview of potentials for renewable energy utilisation in Croatia is given. The existing legislative framework is analysed and crucial future activities for its completion are discussed. Financing opportunities for renewable energy development are also presented.
