Techno-economic characteristics of wind energy use - case of Croatia
In the contribution the use of wind energy is analyzed according to its technical and economic characteristics. Technical guidelines for choosing appropriate wind turbine design, taking into account the wind speed properties of a given location are presented. Factors influencing the amount and quality of electricity produced have been thoroughly discussed. The paper also offers guidelines for operation and control of a wind power plant, since wind’ s stochastic nature can cause certain problems in overall power system operation. Since investments in wind power plants are, in the bottom line, governed by the idea of making profit, the paper also gives guidelines for economic evaluation of wind power projects. The last aspect of wind energy use considered within the paper is environmental impact. In order to support all above mentioned theoretical findings, situation in Croatia regarding to current and future role of wind energy in total energy supply is analysed and some interesting examples are given.
