Biogas pilot plant in Croatia
Faced with high energy expenses (bad energy supply) and emerging ecological problems (disposal of poultry manure), fatstock poultry farm “ Rosulje” in Sisačko-moslavačka county, has decided to build the first biogas facility in the Republic of Croatia for the purpose of providing electrical and thermal energy. It is expected to be placed into operation by mid-December 2003. In order to facilitate a maximum methane production, it is necessary to supplement the existing poultry manure by means of a mass rich with carbon. Since a problem of ratio between nitrogen and carbon appears in the process of production of biogas out of poultry manure, it is necessary to increase the amount of carbon in the substratum (input raw material). For the purpose of changing the ratio between nitrogen and carbon in poultry manure (1:15), it is necessary to modify the primary production by introducing ensilage in addition to manure. The ensilage should be consisting of Sudan grass, alfalfa-grass mixture and ensilage corn in order to reach the ideal ratio of nitrogen and carbon for the purpose of methane production (1:25-30). This will ensure the maximum utilization of the input substratum. The calculations show that the pilot plan will produce 700.344, 48 m3 of gas out of poultry manure and 300.000 m3 of gas out of grasses, which amounts to 1.000.344, 48 m3/year, exceeding the farm’ s needs for self-supply.
