Correlation between eosinophil infiltration and hyperreactive response to distilled water challenge in chronic rhinosinusitis
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between eosinophil infiltration in nasal and sinus mucosa of patients with chronic rhinoinusitis, and their response to distilled water provocation. A group of 14 patients were exposed to provocation by inhalation of 10 ccm of distilled water. Anterior rhinomanomety was performed before and immediately after the provocation. All patients were operated on within a month after nasal provocation. Samples of nasal polyps and mucosa from the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses were analyzed for eosinophil and neutrophil leukocyte infiltration. Results showed the patients with chronic sinusitis and eosinophil infiltration of more than 10 eosinophil per high power field (400x) of nasal mucosa have a significantly higher basal nasal resistance (0,25 Pa/cm3s-1). Upon provocation the resistance increased to 0,37 and 0,19 Pa/cm3s-1 in the eosinophil positive and eosinophil negative group, respectively.
