Metonymic friends and foes, metaphor and cultural models

A cross-linguistic comparison of the patterns of use of metonymic expressions of the CAPITAL FOR GOVERNMENT type uncovers significant cross-linguistic and cross-cultural differences in the sense of the underuse of some possibilities, although metonymic mappings are in theory available. The odd patterns of the use of this metonymy type in Croatian are shown to be motivated by a metaphorical scale of closeness with respect to the deictic centre or ego, ranging from indifferents to metonymic friends and foes to the ego. The scale in question is itself based on a variant of the conceptual metaphor EMOTIONAL DISTANCE IS DISTANCE IN PHYSICAL SPACE.
