Landscape and cultural diversity in the education for landscape architecture in Croatia

The existing landscape diversity in Croatia is based as well on natural as cultural determinants. Basically, the national territory is composed of two largely different geographical units, the Karst and the Pannonian areas, each of them with further typological subdivisions. At the same time, the country occupies a position of the pronounced transitive character where the cultural landscape is stipulated by a presence of various cultures, Latin, Slav, Hungarian, German, Islamic and Byzantine. They have made an evident imprint on the land. This diversity presents a great national asset. Therefore, an education of landscape architects should take that fact into account. As far as this aspect is concerned, two principal goals seem to be of crucial importance: 1. to preserve the existing landscape diversity through conservation planning approaches 2. to develop new landscapes with an objective to promote landscape diversity in the country as a whole. The new full academic landscape architecture programme at the University of Zagreb will offer courses in landscape planning and design that would make an educational contribution towards that end. In terms of the curriculum, this requires an emphasis on knowledge in certain areas, such as geology and vegetation cover, landscape morphology, evolution of the country's land-use. However, special attention must be paid to integration of this recognition into planning and design courses.
